All It Takes Is One Night to Plunge the World into Darkness
Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe--until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.
Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority--to keep Shelby and her son safe--could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.
As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive. In this first book in an eerily plausible dystopian series, a memorable cast of characters must navigate a familiar world thrown into chaos.
Deep Shadows is the first book in The Remnant series by Vannetta Chapman. This series kicks off with the prequel, Overshadowed, which is a free e-book available for download to your Kindle or Nook.
When I started reading this series, I had a few friends ask me, “What is this book about?” When I explained that it was a dystopian novel that takes place in a small Texas town, I was surprised to hear, “What is dystopian?” It seems like the genre really exploded after the release of The Hunger Games but it makes sense that older readers who steer clear of secular young-adult fiction may not be familiar with the genre. Make no mistake, the genre did exist but it has gained popularity in recent years.
To answer the question, “What is dystopian?” Dystopia is the opposite of utopia. It is an undesirable and frightening community or society. This series offers readers a plausible dystopian scenario which makes it a great intro to the genre.
What would you do to survive and how far would you go to insure that your child’s needs were met? These themes are explored as Shelby Sparks is desperate to get her hands on insulin for her son who is a type 1 diabetic. Can you imagine living in a world where you couldn’t pop in your car and drive down to the local pharmacy to pick up what you need?
This book forces you to think about what would happen if technology failed. As food and resources became scarce, fear and panic would lead to the collapse of society. With anarchy prevailing, it would be up to brave individuals to try to regain control of their communities.
The best thing about this series is how well-developed the characters are. It is rare that an author is able to fully develop a large cast of characters. Usually a book will have only one to two figures that really shine. Deep Shadows has a well written cast of supporting characters in addition to the protagonist, Shelby Sparks. I’ve been impressed with the entire series so far. Be sure to check back as I’ll be following The Remnant through to the conclusion.
In addition to an excellent story, the author has also provided information and resources on how to make an Emergency Preparedness Plan. The Remnant has definitely prompted me to learn more about how I can prepare my family in the event of an emergency. I won’t say it’s because of paranoia but it is very wise to be prepared. Don’t think that an emergency cannot happen to you. Natural disasters can happen anywhere and to anyone.
