Q&A with Kathleen Fuller

I’m super excited to share this author interview with you all! Kathleen is one of my favorite authors. She writes sweet Amish fiction with substance and depth—something I really appreciate in this genre. Sometimes I feel that this genre can come off as simple and idealistic. Kathleen portrays the Amish as authentic people with real human emotion. I love that and I’m so honored that she sat down with me to answer a few questions. I’m getting spoiled y’all! These past couple of interviews have me feeling like a legit book blogger!!!

Without further ado, I give a very warm welcome to Kathleen Fuller!

Q: Words of the Heart is the third in the Amish Letters series. Is this the final book or can we expect to hear more from the Birch Creek community?

A: There’s definitely more coming from Birch Creek! I’m finishing up the first draft of the first book in The Amish Brides series, and I’m really excited about it. There will be mentions of characters from previous Birch Creek books, too. :)

Q: Out of all three novels in the Amish Letters series which one was your favorite to write and why?

A: Words From the Heart was my favorite. I really enjoyed Ivy and Noah’s relationship, and of course Cevilla’s meddling ways. But I also got to incorporate a few unique things—the Korean war, Meniere’s Disease, and antiques/upcycling. It was a fun and challenging book to write.

Q: With this book’s release date being right around the corner on February 13th, I’m sure you’re already thinking of your next story. Can you give us a hint of what is to come next?

A: The Teacher’s Bride is next, and it features two quirky characters. The male lead is basically Mr. Spock in suspenders and the heroine is a walking disaster. Obviously, they’re perfect for each other.

Q: I love the cover of Words from the Heart. I admit that I am a cover junky…so, I have to know. What is your favorite cover out of all the books you’ve ever written?

A: It’s a tie between Written in Love and Words from the Heart. I love how Jalon’s letter is on the cover of Written in Love, and Words From the Heart really represents the story.

Q: Everyone knows that chocolate and coffee makes the world go ‘round. But, if you couldn’t have chocolate, what would be your go-to substitute?

A: Perish the thought, but since you asked, probably cheese—the other major food group.

Q: Who is your all-time favorite character that you’ve written?

A: Ruby Glick She’s coming up in The Teacher’s Bride. :)

Q: According to your Facebook page, you like to crochet. How old were you when you learned and who taught you?

A: I don’t quite remember how old I was, probably third or fourth grade. My grandmother and mother taught me the basics. My mother could read patterns, but my grandmother couldn’t read at all, so she would look at a picture and then crochet it. I’m so amazed by that. She would make elaborate things like doilies and tablecloths. She loved to crochet. I crocheted on and off until last year when I picked it up in earnest and learned how to make things other than scarfs. My mom made beautiful afghans, sweaters, and other things.

Q: Where is your favorite place to write and why? Is your space cluttered with notes and books or do you keep it free of distractions?

A: It may or may not surprise you that a) I don’t have a particular place where I write and b) nothing is free of distractions. I work best being distracted, actually. I also write in a number of locations—my living room, our office that my husband and I share, the car, the airport, Starbucks, Panera, doctors offices, etc. I learned how to grab writing time whenever I could when I first started writing, because my kids were little and I homeschooled the older two for several years. Writing time was always at a premium. If I had to write in a particular place all the time, I don’t think I could do it.
