In ‘Murder Simply Brewed’ by Vannetta Chapman, Amber has devoted her life to The Village. A woman of faith she attends services at a local church (she’s not Amish). One Sunday the minister shares a sermon about King David. She’s disturbed by this picture of David, this imperfect picture. Why do you think the Bible includes the experiences of flawed individuals? What can we learn from these portions of scripture?
I believe that the Bible includes the experiences of flawed individuals because outside of Christ, there are no perfect people. We are imperfect people who are in need of a savior. There isn’t a single person outside of Jesus Christ that could live and fulfill every letter of the law. If there were a perfect person then there wouldn’t have been a need for Christ to give his life for ours. He was a spotless lamb given for our transgressions and by His wounds, we are healed.
Some of us make bigger mistakes than others. For David, his lust caused him to not only commit adultery but also murder. He paid grievously for his sins when he lost his infant son. But, David repented and God forgave him of his sins.
Some of our sins may be big and some of our sins may be small. But all sins separate us from the Father. There isn’t a single one of us that need not repent and confess.
Quite simply, trying to live a perfect life under the law didn’t work. We have extraordinary people like David who goofed. This proves to us that not a single one of us can do this on our own. Because David was just like us. He was just a man and he needed a savior.
