In ‘A Loyal Heart‘ by Jody Hedlund Olivia justifies her actions in trying to find the holy chalice as she believes it could help her brother. In her justification, she misses the point that by sneaking around and trying to take it for him she is, in reality, trying to steal it. Our culture often tells us that something can’t be wrong if we’re doing it for the right reasons, especially if our choice won’t hurt someone else. What’s wrong with this kind of reasoning?
Oh boy, this one is a tough one to answer. I think the reasoning is wrong here because often we don’t realize that our choice will hurt someone else. There’s a quote from the Sword of Truth series that I love, “the greatest harm can result from the best intentions.”
Maybe you lie to protect someone’s feelings. You feel that you’re keeping a person from hurt but in fact, they’re hurt even more when they find out that you lied. We are human and we cannot see all ends.
When our culture encourages us to make the wrong choices because no one will get hurt—they’re unwisely assuming that no one will get hurt. We are often convinced that good intentions will cover our poor choices. It’s a sneaky little lie of Satan. Somehow we think this sin is different because the heart feels like it’s in the right place. Remember Eve in the garden? What harm could come from eating the forbidden fruit? Her intentions were not inherently evil. She wanted understanding and knowledge. So, Satan tricked her with good intentions.
I think the question we need to ask ourselves is this. Is this the right thing to do? Our intentions may be noble but we need to make sure we reach them the right way.
