In ‘Words From the Heart‘ by Kathleen Fuller Noah Schlabach is a workaholic, building and maintaining his auctioneer business. However, he develops some health issues that affect his ability to work and force him to take some time away. Obviously, he struggled with this necessity as he was such a go-go-go person and had some trouble slowing down and finding a new balance in his life. A balance that included making more time for his faith and his Father as he navigated his new future. Do you have trouble “slowing down”? What are ways you take time to spend time with God?
I do have trouble slowing down. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have much choice but to stay busy. My busy times don’t come from a job or things I’ve volunteered for. Rather, my schedule is dictated by the medical needs of my family.
However, I do think that taking time for God is really important and I’ve tried to find ways to spend more time with Him. One of the things I love to do is listen to praise music in the car. I can listen, pray and spend time with Him through music. It speaks to me and I find myself often calling out to God as I open my heart to the lyrics.
I also love my Creative Bible. I try to make it a point to spend time in the Word. Not just reading but reading and pouring my heart out to God creatively. I do this with Bible mapping, journaling, and art. It’s a great stress reliever and I’m brought closer to the scripture when my heart and mind are clear.
I also spend time with God when I read Biblical and Christian fiction. I’m not saying that is a substitute for the Bible but it’s something I can relate to. It helps me grow in Him. I’m encouraged by fiction to draw closer to Him. I look for the truths and wisdom that the author allowed God to convey through them.
I think no matter how busy we are that we can steal little moments with Him. Whether it is in the car, on a lunch break or even sitting in a doctor’s appointment.
He will meet us where are. Like any other friend, we just need to find the time to reach out to Him.
