Selling stories is a deadly business
Tanwen doesn't just tell stories--she weaves them into crystallized sculptures that sell for more than a few bits. But the only way to escape the control of her cruel mentor and claw her way from poverty is to set her sights on something grander: becoming Royal Storyteller to the king.
During her final story peddling tour, a tale of treason spills from her hands, threatening the king himself. Tanwen goes from peddler to prey as the king's guard hunts her down...and they're not known for their mercy. As Tanwen flees for her life, she unearths long-buried secrets and discovers she's not the only outlaw in the empire. There's a rebel group of weavers...and they're after her too.
The Story Peddler is the first book in a brand new series by new to me author, Lindsay Franklin. This story had a very interesting premise, though it reminded me a lot of Shadow Weaver by MarcyKate Connolly. Instead of weaving with shadows, Tanwen weaves her story with light.
Like with Shadow Weaver, I found the main character was self-centered and hard to connect with. And like Shadow Weaver, I was disappointed by a lack of back story. How did story peddlers get their power? Why does the bad guy hate the peddlers? I saw elaborate power and fascinating details about the character’s powers but not much understanding of how or why.
I also found the parallels with Lord of the Rings to be slightly distracting. There’s a fellowship that must flee a city, cross a couple of bridges and a marshland—and even an inn with a catchy little name. While The Greasy Rag isn’t as regal sounding as The Prancing Pony, the story felt tired and overdone through this section of the story.
However, the story did have strengths. While I felt the story could have been better developed, the elaborate light weaving really grabbed my attention. It made me want to love this story. Not everyone has the ability to beautifully describe a magical ability and that was the strong point of this book.
The love story in this book was also not a favorite of mine. Love triangle+Insta-love are two tropes that can easily grate on my nerves. Unfortunately, this was the case in this story. I saw no reason for Tanwen to fall in love so quickly with another man—ignoring the man who had loved her his whole life.
I was torn on how to rate this story due to issues that I outlined above. But, again, the beautifully elaborate way that the author presented a story peddler’s ability makes me want to read the next in the series to see if some of my questions are answered.
I give this book a solid 3/5 rating. Though the delivery is shaky, the potential is there for a great story.

I appreciate the honest review. Even if I don’t always love everything about a particular novel, I usually learn something from it as a writer.
