Honestly, I was having a hard time trying to figure out which books I loved that other’s hated. I am not one of those people who feel the need to take up for a book. People can love or hate a book and that’s just fine with me. So, when I read over a negative (for a book I loved) it is out of sight, out of mind.
Having this mindset, I went to Goodreads and looked over books I rated five stars that have an average rating of around 4 or less.
Mockingjay
I really did like Mockingjay. Sure, it was sad. Sometimes Katniss got on my nerves and yes, my heart was ripped from my chest and stomped on when a certain dashing young man had to die on me.
This book is rated 4.03 and I see a lot of hate as I look over the reviews. Hate that just kind of surprises me. Because it’s a highly quotable 5-star gem for me!
Although, the book cover is meh. Really, it’s just not a great cover at all. That blue compared to the black and the red covers is just strange so…I’ll give people who one.
Wizard’s First Rule (I might as well just say the whole Sword of Truth series)
I have seen so many people say how badly they hated this series due to the content and the “propaganda.” Goodkind is a huge Ayn Rand follower so those teaching do come through a lot throughout the book. Yes, some of the torture (physical and sexual) can be hard to stomach.
Additionally, I know the author comes off a little rude on social media. Still, I really do like this series and have read all the way through Confessor.
Having said that, I honestly don’t think I’m interested in his newer books based on some of the reviews. But, who knows…maybe it’ll be the same difference for me? Maybe I’ll love them when everyone else hated them.
Little Women
This book is rated barely a 4 on Goodreads. Even a close friend of mine (online) told me she didn’t like Little Women. I have no words. None. Okay, I do…but I probably shouldn’t say them. :-)
Sorry, I just can’t even with this one. It’s good, dang it!
(How do I learn to be friends with someone who hates Little Women? No one needs that kind of negativity in their life! This friendship may be over ;-))
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
This book is actually rated fairly high on Goodreads. I’m including it because of the people I know who think it is the devil’s playground. I’m not even going to justify that one with a response.
I like it. They can deal with it.
I know I’m reaching with this one since the context (of the title) is a book I love that other people read and hated.
But, I am in a ranty-mc-rant-pants mood and I felt like rolling my eyes at the people for hating on this book. Muggles. Pssh.
Serafina and the Black Cloak
I really do not understand the 3.91 rating on Goodreads. I don’t. It’s MIDDLE-GRADE fiction, people! Of course, it’s going to be not up to the same standards as an adult book.
I’ve seen everything from being downrated because “how dare someone make a horror story set at the Biltmore Estate” to “Meh, it’s a young adult book.”
It’s a person’s right to feel however they want about a book but I just can’t agree on this one. I rated the entire series 5 stars and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book, Willa of the Wood.
There you have it, five books I loved that others hated. And maybe even a rant or two, or three. I’m a mood…can ya tell? No, really, it isn’t a bad mood. It’s just a mood. Coffee, I think I need coffee. Coffee will make everything better.

Completely understand your rant though ;)

I actually really enjoyed Mockingjay! There’s so much hate for the ending of that series and I just don’t get it. I simply don’t read it or pay attention. Yes, it was sad, and there was a certain death that ripped my heart from my chest, but it was a solid ending I thought!
Thanks so much for participating – added you to the list :)

I don’t get it either :D
